Rule
Adopted the ALI Model Penal Code test for insanity: a defendant is not responsible if, as a result of mental disease or defect, they lacked substantial capacity either to appreciate the criminality of their conduct or to conform their conduct to the requirements of law.
Significance
D.C. Circuit adopted the ALI/MPC insanity test, replacing the M’Naghten test; influential in federal and state courts before the Insanity Defense Reform Act of 1984.
